always very moral. Any woman who stepped out of line was ostracized & any girl with an illegitimate child a slut & the child treated like a leper. What hypocrisy there was. We were told nothing of sex or the meaning of having periods, only to keep clean & keep away from boys, but not why. How ignorant & innocent we were. I was 17 before I knew how babies came about & 20 before any real facts. Women whispered together, but Esther's ear-holes were always taking it in & wondering the whys etc. Oh, we had a gramophone, a great luxury then  some even had an organ or piano, how I envied them  I was as a child very plain, with long fair hair, slim & gangly, my only attractive asset large brown eyes & I suppose long slim legs, which I didn't realize till I was much older. I was considered brainy & went to High School, but too poor to go to Grammar School. The nearest one then was at Walsall, in any case miners' daughters weren't allowed the luxury of further education, it was known as trying to "raise above your class"  Typists were in our area unknown & shop-girls considered common, work
