he was a lecher — lovely word — & beat her  I loved her very much  she had a quiet gentle personality & she was so lovely, with beautiful hair & face. I loved it when she came home to see Mother  she lived quite near. She would tell me I was clever & would, one day, be beautiful. She would brush my hair & stroke it & tell me to be a "good girl" & I would "go far"  I wallowed in her praises  nobody else thought so  everyone else thought I read too much, was too dreamy & set my sights too high as I said I would never go into service, though I did for a while when I left school. I adored Nell  to me, she was lovely & glamorous, striking in looks  tall & elegant & always beautifully dressed. I didn't know then, that most of her dresses were cast offs from her rich mistress. Sadly she was later raped by the "Master" but she told me no one would believe her & fortunately there was no child. It would have meant disgrace & the workhouse, a dreadful place. She left & went to Yorkshire where she eventually met Teddy. She was very good to me in my early reens & later, when nursing & I had my 2 weeks holidy, I always spent them
