In summer we played outside  hopscotch, whip & top, hoops, marbles, ball games, skipping, shops, with small bits of broken china or glass  I loved playing schools, bossing other kids around, bilberry picking on the common, blackberry picking later  In winter we knitted, made dolls clothes, drew, painted & made Xmas decorations and a Xmas tree made out of 2 hoops, one inside the other & bound with coloured paper twisted round them & we hung sugar mice & other sugar shapes on. Stockings always held an apple, orange, nuts, sweet & perhaps a pair of gloves or slippers or scarf, & for me an annual book, a drawing book & pencils & always a new winter dress laid over the bottom of the bed, how exciting!! We stirred the Xmas pudding & on Xmas day prodded & poked to find the 3d bits or even a sixpence. Some of the family would come for tea & bring any children they had & we'd have a sing song, all simple but then so cosy & safe  The family would bring us small gifts & a 1/- how rich we were  I would knit my mother a tea cosy or make her a little bag with
