a scrap of material I'd been given  I loved sewing & I'd embroider her name on it  As I grew older 12-13 I'd mind a baby for someone for 3d or 6d, I once tipped a baby out — they were big high prams then, but it cried so I never told anyone  I never heard it came to harm!! With these 3d & 6ds I had a "sweet card," then at Xmas I had 3/- or even 5/- & I could have a whole box of assorted sweets, how I longed for a box of Cadburys Milk Chocs 6d a ¼ lb., what luxury. We alwayed seemed to have snow in winter & we made snowmen & snow ball fights & slides  There always seemed to find something to do  The woods in summer always full of children all day. I never heard of woman or child being molested. Farmers killed their own pigs & if we heard one screaming, we'd run a mile to see it man handled on to the bench, & the butcher would cut its throat & we'd watch them scald it & scrape it then hang it up & cut it open & take out its innards & people would order anything, nearly everyone had a side of bacon hanging in the larder & there'd be chitterlings, white as snow
