A little brook ran along the bottom of our garden with a willow tree in the corner. I would retreat &
hide there with any book I
could get hold of. I was always getting into trouble for not helping in the house Washing up meant putting on the
kettle, though we did
have a cold water tap in the scullery, many places had 1 tap in a yard to serve several houses & in winter it would
be frozen. Of course with a
large family there were more workers, which meant more money coming in, so in a way we were considered quite prosperous
to some & would have been
more so if my father didn't drink & gamble, but he was so well liked he was forgiven much. I've left many things
out John but I've tried to give
you some idea
When I was 12 we moved to a 3 bed roomed
bungalow, what luxury, running hot
water from a boiler, a proper bathroom even though a boiler had to be lit to heat the water. By this time there was only

& myself at home with an occasional visit from Win & the
ones who lived away. Jerry
was illegitimate & had been a thorn in the side of the family for this reason all his life. It embittered
