I had to work & in those days girls had to go into Service. That meant working for a well to do family as a servant to cook & clean the BIG houses. It was slavery really & I had other thoughts about this. One advantage though was it taught me to appreciate nice things & READ lovely books so in a way I became better educated & knowledgeable & encouraged to speak the Kings speach properly. I knew Service — in this sense — wasn't for me. I wanted to teach, but had no qualifications, but I loved nursing so at the age of 18 I was able to pass the General Knowledge exam to get a place in a large hospital in Wolverhampton. It was a 3-4 year course including Midwifery or any specializing. Nothing bothered me I was very happy, & loved it all, even
