though it was very hard work — long hours, very poor pay. My first year was £30 & my first Sister's pay £60 but Board & Bed & uniform were part of the contract, so wages were considered Pocket Money & each year increased ones status until the magic day we PASSED OUT & wore the wonderful stripes of Staff Nurse complete with silver Badge & waist navy-band & silver Buckle, on to Ward Sister, with navy dres — oh! the pride of it all, that I a poor miner's daughter could mix with the — at that time, Hierarchy of surgeons & the like & be looked up to as someone to be reckoned with. Medicine — in all its forms — very different then. very strict — no boy friends allowed, it had to be LOVE or duty. The two didn't mix!!
