1939 War clouds were gathering & when Germany declared war on September 4th I was doing midwifery in Derby, a northern city, but I had already joined the British Red Cross & went home to wait to be sent to a Hospital. Nothing happened for a time & I went to an "Eye" Hospital in Wolverhampton — a large Midland town. Bombs were dropping on London & other cities & everywhere people were being killed, it was a dreadful time & went on for 6 years. There was rationing for food & clothes in fact everything, whole cities were destroyed & many people killed. You will read of this war in your education I'm sure or read books about it. Your country
